I put some new bar tape on my Tricross because the old stuff was pretty old, matted down, and was stretching apart. Alex suggested I try a different color, like maroon (maroon?), but fortunately all the LBS had was black, red, and blue. I figured red would look better than blue.
Someone else put red bar tape on their handlebars (sorry, I've forgotten who it was) and they didn't like it. I think the red looks pretty cool. It's kinda bright, though. Undoubtedly it will darken with wear.
Happy riding!

I believe the other red tape guy you read might be Apertome...Ear to the Breeze blogger guy.
And just what is wrong with bright?
You have red tape with black hoods on your Tricross. I've got black tape with red hoods on my Tricross. Red DOES look sharp, though this is all individual preference.
I'll probably go with red Fizik tape when I need to replace what's there.
Looks good! Me...I'm going back with black bar tape after a stint with silver.
I've always been a basic black type when it comes to bar tape, but I must confess that looks pretty nice... I'm thinking about getting crazy with my next build...
Yes, sorry Apertome, I didn't mean to steal your blog idea, and I new someone else (you) had recently blogged about this. Thanks Doug!
Anyway, it's like riding a new bike now and I kind of like it.
I ran bright yellow tape, for quite a while, on my old LeMond just because it had yellow decals. Nowadays, I tend to either have black or brown (natural) or one side of each. For some reason, the motley look appeals to me on some bikes.
I dig it, betcha it looks good with the red accents on the Tricross. What kind of tape is it? Looks really comfy!
Jon - you know, I've always had a thing for the orange tape that came with my 1977 Schwinn LeTour III (it is orange). The motly look is intriguing, but I'm not sure if I'm ready for that yet.
Ben - It's "Phat Wrap" from Specialized. Got it at my LBS. Under the original wrap was stick-on gel-type padding that came with the bike. According to my wife, my bike has maroon accents, therefore the maroon tape, etc. Anyway, after a couple of commutes, I like the red, plus it's really spongy.
No matter what color, new tape feels nice.
