Heaven in a Skillet

In an effort to diversify my blog and add variety, I submit this photo of morels I found yesterday in the woods. These are black morels (the smallest) and greys (the larger ones in the skillet). The biggest and best morels, the yellow sponges have not yet emerged. I'll be searching for more on Sunday.

Okay, what are morels? Are they mushrooms or some other type of fungus?

They are mushrooms and they are fantastic! They come up in spring for only a brief time and are scattered only here and there in woodlands. I didn't find any last year.

I hunted morels every year, when I lived in Ohio. Great eating, and a good excuse for a mountain bike ride (the hunt) all rolled up into one!
